Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an activist vehicle. DuVernay developed a social aware by her mother. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. While she was still in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. From this position she started her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
